The route turns from Glencorse heading north up the Kirk Burn path from where there are spectacular views back along the Pentland range.

The final climb is to the top of Allermuir (493m) from where there are again panoramic views, both looking back towards the Pentland range, but also to the north and east over the Forth Estuary with the three iconic crossings, Edinburgh with its castle and Arthur’s seat and East Lothian with, in the distance, the Bass Rock.

From Allermuir, The Way descends to journey’s end at Swanston passing another of the Pentland’s arboreta. On the hills above Swanston you may come across Swanston Farm’s iconic Highland Cattle often found on the flanks of Caerketton and Allermuir Hills in warmer weather. They have a gentle, relaxed nature and will usually move out of the way as you approach – however take care to give them space and keep your dog under control.
