Pentland Way: Carlops to Flotterstone

This section of the Pentland Way is approximately 10 km in length and follows the main Pentland Ridge. It is the hardest section with the most climbing.

From Nine Mile Burn it climbs Monks Rig, crosses the Kips and reaches Scald Law, the highest hill before descending to Flotterstone via Carnethy and Turnhouse Hill. In recent times the track has become very degraded and the scree loose and slippery – poles may be advisable. Please keep to the path to protect the threatened ridge ecosystem – however tempting a diversion may be.

The main alternative is to turn north-west when at the dip between Scald Law and Carnethy. This path descends to the Howe at the top end of Loganlea reservoir. The tarmac-ed road skirts Loganlea and descends to Glencorse reservoir where the Pentland Way can be rejoined. This avoids the ascents of Carnethy and Turnhouse.

Turning South-east at this dip, the path descend to the A702 where there are a couple of lay-bys.
